Scanned by the song of the muezzin, life in Indian Kashmir proceeds intertwined with the ordinary violence linked to the Indo-Pakistani conflict. Every story, every turn of fate, such as that of the first crackdown imposed in the valley, or the decision to take part in the armed struggle, takes an unexpected turn near a mosque in the immediate aftermath of prayer. Even today, the dream of an independent kashmir – and with it the nightmare of conflict – is perpetuated generation after generation, fed by the blood of new martyrs.
